Ystalyfera Secondary

The year 7 curriculum at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera has been re-designed to follow the principles of the Curriculum for Wales and includes the following Areas of Learning and Experience:
- Wales, Celtica and Europe (a Language, Literacy and Communication course which focuses on developing language within a local, national and international context)
- Mathematics and Numeracy
- English
- Humanities
- STEM
- Health and Wellbeing
- Expressive Arts
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Design and Technology
Also, on the Year 7 and Year 8 timetable is ‘Dysgu Gorau Dysgu Byw’ which is a bespoke course developed at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera which concentrates on growing learners’ confidence and skills to become independent and ambitious learners; immersing learners in new experiences and providing opportunities for pupils to contribute to their local community and charitable causes. In this course, learners have the opportunity to discuss and measure their own progress, by taking responsibility for their own learning whilst looking at the bigger picture. Other activities which make up the course include studying the book ‘You are Awesome’ by Matthew Syed, organising a Christmas boxes initiative and organising a fun day to raise money for local charities, e.g. outdoor games and archery. These activities are focused on supportting pupils to realise the four purposes.
