Sixth Form
It gives me great pleasure to present you with this information, which contains all the details of the courses on offer within Ystalyfera Bro Dur’s Sixth Form, Canolfan Gwenallt. Here, at Ystalyfera Bro Dur’s Sixth Form, you will have the best possible opportunity to follow your chosen pathway.
Being a member of Canolfan Gwenallt is a privilege and we are proud of the quality of the young people who join us. They are all leaders, role models and individuals who make an invaluable contribution to school life. As the senior students at our 3-18 school these are you the young adults who set the standards, these are the individuals who bridge between the younger pupils and teachers, they take on a range of roles and responsibility such as:
- buddies for new year 7 pupils,
- reading mentors for KS3 pupils
- leadership and management prefects
- House captains
The extra-curricular programme that we offer is very rich and varied and provides opportunities for individuals to develop social skills, leadership skills, and skills such as working with others; key skills for their future in the world of work. Our 1st XV rugby team is extremely successful, and we also have basketball, netball, and football teams. As a well-known centre for performance arts, there are countless opportunities to enjoy choral, instrumental, and dramatic presentations.
Our academic offer is rich, and Canolfan Gwenallt students regularly perform at the highest standard in national examinations despite their busy and exciting lives as school prefects and leaders and they continue to astound us! Students from Canolfan Gwenallt leave us to study at the highest level in Welsh and British Universities, and over the past few years, we have secured a place for nearly every one of our students at one of their chosen courses within Higher Education. We are particularly proud of the choices available for you at 16+; a broad offer of traditional, BTEC and vocational courses. There are over 30 options choices – from Physics to Welsh, Sociology to Public Services, Engineering, History and Drama. Students will also study for the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is an excellent vehicle to gain qualifications in all of the Key Skills as well as diverse opportunities to work together on different projects.
The school's experienced team is always available to advise and help you. You can discuss your options for the future and develop skills that will be valuable in the workplace. Our aim is to provide the best support and education for each individual so that our students are ready to progress to the workplace, apprenticeship or university.
I look forward very much to welcoming you to the Sixth Form of Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur and I hope that you will enjoy all the opportunities available at Canolfan Gwenallt. If you would like to discuss any of the options offered, please contact us for more information.
Best wishes,
Mr Emyr Evans
